Polaroids:  Not Quite Forgotten
December 3rd 2008 7:24pm | Eric Smith

It was about 7 years ago when I was introduced to Polaroid’s.  I know what you’re thinking.  Really?  You only knew of Polaroid’s seven years ago?  Well, yes and no.  It was then where I learned of the professional, wide expanses that the instant, shake to develop film had to offer.  I had always known what a Polaroid was, but never realized how cool it could be.  As many of you who know me, I never am content with doing things the easy way.  In this case I guess we could assume that I don’t like taking photos the easy way.  Sure I could be happy as a clam snapping some photos with a small digital point & shoot, but what fun would that be?  Where is the challenge in that?  The challenge of a permanent image, once that shutter is snapped and the film is pulled from the camera.

Arkansas Traveller 100 Miler Race Report
November 10th 2008 2:47pm | Eric Smith

This is an entry from the archives I was excited to find.  It always brings some great memories and gets me motivated to train for my next epic race.  Original article posted on October 4, 2005.

I think it started back in May after the Ice Age 50. I was running with a fellow Buffalo, Brian Kuhn and we were talking about his experiences with his first 100 miler, the Arkansas Traveller. He told me that I should run it this year. I had my mind set that I was running the Chicago Marathon again, and discounted the idea. I was planning on entering the marathon along with Marla Luckey, and we were going to make a weekend of it. Another couple of months or so went by and she was wavering on whether to take a big trip to see a friend, or run the marathon. It was at this point, where I knew I wanted a new challenge. Instead of running the marathon again, why not try a 100 miler with Brian this year. It would be a huge goal since I had just completed a 50 miler, which up to that point was almost the toughest thing I had done.

An Event Apart Chicago 2008 - Day 2
October 14th 2008 9:06am | Eric Smith

I was really impressed with the new speakers that I didn’t have the chance to hear from last year, including Rob Weychert, Cameron Moll, and Jeff Veen.  This day was even more focused on design and theory, rather than actual code.  I will admit, I am always a fan of some hardcore coding demonstrations, but I do need to learn more about the design concepts and theory.  This session didn’t disappoint.

An Event Apart Chicago 2008 - Day 1
October 13th 2008 9:13pm | Eric Smith

The first day of An Event Apart Chicago is in the books.  Think Jeffery Zeldman, Eric Meyer, and Dan Cederholm.  As I headed home from the first day, making the tough choice to bypass the opening night party, I thought of what the conference meant to me at this point.  More specifically, what I learned differently from last year.

Allow me to recap some of the more interesting points the speakers presented.

Lamenting the Summer
September 24th 2008 5:28pm | Eric Smith

The cool nights over the past couple of days have quickly reminded me that times are changing. As much as I don’t enjoy thinking about it, colder days are coming. But rather instead of thinking of the impending winter weather, I often think back on what this summer has brought me, and what I regret not accomplishing.

Unplugged
May 22nd 2008 3:49pm | Eric Smith

Do you ever look forward to escaping from the day by not using technology? Do you think that this is even possible? Now I’m not talking about living sans electricity or without a hot shower, but some of your daily leisure tasks.

How many times do we work all day on the computer, only to get home to surf, watch TV from our DVR’s, or meet up with some friends online to play some Xbox? As someone who works in IT, escaping from technology just isn’t plausible. However, limiting it in some of my leisure tasks can be reduced.
